Showdown between the 3 "remaining" bikes
Syntace, Bike Friday, and Brompton

I am finding it hard to decide what to dohere. What bike(s) do I keep, and which do I get rid of. I list Bike Friday here, and the assumption is that I keep the new one, and ell the old one. But since it may work the other way around, I just say Bike Friday. I show the Synapse, but I'm having trouble letting go of the Mondonico. But if I keep it, unless I really can't do either around town or touring.since it doesn't have rack mounts. I could tour with it, but only with bikepacking bags, and probably replacing the drive train with something like Tiagra or basic SRAM. Like I say, it's a tough decision as it handles so well, and has some sentimental value.

In the end, I only need to be able to do 3 things:

  1. Ride with the groups I ride with, without getting left in the dust. While all the groups I ride with are "no Drop", that is, they will stop at major turns so no one gets lost, that doesn't mean that if I am slower, that I wont end up riding by myself.
  2. Running around, doing things that I would otherwise do with a car. This doesn't mean carrying a bag of dog food, or other large things, but it does mean getting, and carrying a few days of groceries home, going to the gym, or eating establishment and getting back home without the bike getting stolen, and
  3. Doing 1 -2 week Credit Card Tours. That means getting to the start, doing the tour, and getting back home, all in one piece. For the to and from part, it should be mamgeable with a reasonable amout of effort. Note, I don't plan to do any more "epic" tours, and I'm thinking of only Credit Card trips, so no camping or cooking gear will be taken, no need for multiple sets of most things, and a presumtion of relatively consistant weather. That is, I wont go to cold climates, And warm climates on the same trip. In fact, my expectation is to not do any cold weather trips.

I also do some more casual around town riding, but realistically, and of these bikes, or pretty much any other bike for that matter, can do that, so it's not in this comparison. In fact, it the same *could* be said for running around, except that the Brompton does this so well, that it needs to be able show this in my chart.

As for which bike to review, I am assuming that I eliminate my oldest 2 bikes - the Mondonico, and the Randonee. I'll give more details on this at the end. Also, I am not differentiating between the 2 Bike Fridays as both score about the same. Again, I can cover the differences on these below as well.

My scoring is simple: 3 rating values: 0 - it can't do it; 1 - it can, but just not very well; 2 - it's great.

so, here we go:

Bike Group Rides Around Town Touring Total Score Gaps Overlaps
Syntace 2 1 1 4 0
Bike Friday 1 1 2 4 0
Brompton 0 2 2 4 1
Assuming I keep 2 Bikes
Syntace + Friday 2 1 2 5 1 0
Syntace + Brompton 2 2 2 6 0 0
Friday + Brompton 1 2 2 5 1 1

This leads to some interesting observations. If I can only keep 1 bike, then the Brompton isn't the one. While it gets a perfect score for Around Town and Touring. It gets a zero for Group rides, which is the most important use for me. So, it wont do. That leaves the Syntace and the Bike Friday. Both of these get a score of 2 in one area, and 1 in the other two. So which area that these bikes get a 2 in is most important, and how close are these bikes to scoring a 2 in the two areas that they got a 1 in.
